free verse

Caterpillars are ugly creatures

Caterpillars are ugly creatures
Bound by life to crawl upon the ground
To inch their way through cracks and crevices
Stomped on by all the world
Afraid of death all their lives
I wonder – do they know what they become?
Is it embedded in more than just their DNA?
Do they feel a lift when the wind soars past
even as they crawl?
As they pass by gardens
that they will never reach
Does the fragrance of sweet nectar
overwhelm their senses?
Do their wings itch months before they burst
I wonder, then, do caterpillars ever really know
how beautiful they are inside?
